Fall Tournament at Victory Lane

It was a diverse field Saturday for the Fall 2009 Victory Lanes cornhole tournament. Contenders included returning champs John and David “Four Peaks” and powerhouse teams like “T-Bags” Rob and Tannen, “Wheat Wavers” Shay and Christine, and “Cornaholics” Vic and newly matched up but experienced partner Brian. First timers included “All-In” a couple of experienced Baggo players who had no trouble transferring their game and skills to the full cornhole distance and heavier bags, and some combinations of experienced players and first time cornhole players who were new to the game or just new to Victory Lanes.

USACL Slugfest at Sammy’s

It was a small but highly competitive tournament. Seven teams turned out at Sammy’s on 83rd Ave. and Glendale. The format was double elimination with each match being best two out of three. Sammys has a great patio for bags with plenty of room or four courts and spectators, surrounded by a fence of oleanders to reduce and effects of wind. However it was unseasonably hot with temperatures in the high 90s.

Secrets of the Cornbag Cup

On Saturday, the Boonies (Shak, Habib, Dan, Shawn, and their team of supporters) held their third Cornbag Cup tournament at Tempe’s Daley Park. The event was huge by Arizona standards with 66 teams competing for the cup. It attracted all levels of players and fun-seekers. Most were attending their second or third Cornbag Cup, returning with high expectations and great enthusiasm. For those of us first-timers, it was clear this was a special tournament. While other tournaments wrestle with waning interest and struggle to avoid financial losses, the Boonies continue to succeed wildly in comparison. They seem to know something the others do not. As in business, the secret to their success seems to be a combination of basic execution along with astute marketing and positioning.

White Mountain Summer Cornhole Challenge 8/8/9

I finally made the trek up to Overgaard to play in the White Mountain Summer Cornhole Challenge. This is currently the most successful tournament series in Arizona. When I heard from Vic that Dale, the tournament organizer and one of the top contenders, was without a partner was looking for a stand-in teammate, I jumped at the opportunity. Dale’s usual teammate Terry was out of town. My usual teammate was busy that day. And Doug offered to ride up with me. I couldn’t refuse.
